A conversation guide · 3 minute read

Before your first preconception appointment

You don’t need a perfect explanation to start a conversation with a clinician. A short list can help you remember what matters to you.

Prepared by Bloomfora. This practical question guide has not been clinically reviewed. It does not recommend tests or treatment for your individual circumstances.

Start with what you want to leave knowing.

Write down your main concern in your own words. You can bring notes about what you have noticed, relevant dates, medicines you use, and questions you would like to ask. Share only the details needed for your care.

Some questions to make your own

You can ask for a pause.

If a term or explanation is unclear, ask for it in everyday language. You can ask about alternatives, costs, follow-up arrangements, and how to contact the service if you think of another question afterwards.

Before you leave

Try summarising what you understood and ask the clinician to check it. Note the next step and who is responsible for arranging it. Ask which concerns should prompt urgent care in your circumstances.
