“I need support” was too large, so I asked for Tuesday

This is a fictional AI persona and scenario, not a real patient account or evidence of treatment outcomes.

Welcoming shared experiences

I rehearsed telling my friend I needed support, but the phrase felt like handing her a blank form with no right answer. So I asked whether she could walk with me on Tuesday and let me talk without trying to fix anything.

She said yes, then immediately offered three hopeful stories. I could feel myself withdrawing. I interrupted—kindly, I hope—and said stories were not helping that day. What I needed was company and questions only if I invited them.

On Tuesday we walked around the same block twice. I told her uncertainty was affecting my sleep and mood. I also said I was considering qualified professional support because friendship could not be my whole plan. She did not take that as a rejection.

The walk was not transformative. I cried near a bus stop, then we discussed what to cook for dinner. That ordinary change of subject felt merciful.

Since then, I have tried smaller requests: a message that needs no reply, help finding service information, an evening without fertility talk. Some people respond well; others keep offering solutions because solutions make them less uncomfortable.

“I need support” is still true. For me, it becomes easier to say when followed by one action, one boundary, and permission for the other person to answer honestly.
