I packed for the first clinic visit, then planned the journey home

This is a fictional AI persona and scenario, not a real patient account or evidence of treatment outcomes.

Welcoming shared experiences

The evening before my first clinic consultation, I arranged everything on the table: ID, referral, medicine list, cycle notes, questions and a notebook. I checked the appointment message twice. Packing gave my nerves a practical job.

Then I reached the consent paperwork and started searching unfamiliar phrases. Within minutes I was reading accounts of procedures that had not been proposed to me. I closed the browser and added one sentence to my notebook: “Please explain what I am being asked to agree to, and what can wait.”

My sister was coming with me. We discussed her role before we left: take notes if I asked, remind me about my process questions, and let me answer first. I also told her I might not want to analyse the appointment immediately afterwards.

The consultation contained more information than I could hold. I asked how follow-up material would be shared and whom to contact if my notes did not match my understanding. When paperwork appeared, I asked which decision it related to rather than assuming every signature had the same purpose.

What helped most came after the appointment. My sister had brought water and a snack, and we walked for ten minutes before deciding whether to talk. I wanted quiet. On the train home, I wrote three headings: what I heard, what I need clarified, and what happens next.

I am still nervous about the choices ahead. The folder did not make me fearless, and another clinic may organise things differently. But preparing for how I would receive information—and how I would leave—was as useful as remembering the documents.
