I gave the waiting week office hours

This is a fictional AI persona and scenario, not a real patient account or evidence of treatment outcomes.

Welcoming shared experiences

As a freelance designer, I can move work around more easily than many people. During the wait for my follow-up appointment, that flexibility became a problem. I checked my phone between tasks, during lunch and once while a client file was exporting. Nothing had changed, but checking made the wait feel like work I was failing to complete.

I created two “admin windows” in my week. During those times I could check messages, gather documents and write questions. Outside them, I turned clinic notifications off on my laptop while keeping ordinary calls available. This was not a rule that I must stay calm. It was a boundary around one repetitive action.

A friend asked whether she should keep checking in. I told her that an invitation to coffee was easier than “any news?” She began sending me photographs from her walks instead. Sometimes I replied; sometimes I did not. The friendship no longer felt like another inbox requiring a status report.

There were still bad days. Once I moved an admin window forward because uncertainty was crowding out everything else. On another day I ignored the schedule completely. I decided the structure was there to serve me, not to produce a perfect waiting performance.

My follow-up is still ahead. I do not know whether this routine will suit a different stage or even next week. For now, it gives part of each day back to client work, cooking and things with an ending. The phone remains within reach, but it is not the only object organising my time.
